Wonder City Bakery

Wonder City Bakery soon to open in downtown Hopewell

Hopewell, VA – Another new business will make its home in downtown Hopewell, and it comes with a sweet aroma.

Wonder City Bakery is the brainchild of Trish Honaker, former legal analyst turned baker, who has always had a passion for food.

“My family is full of great cooks, so scratch-made food has always been a feature in my life.  During my undergrad years at University of Virginia, I missed my family’s food and began cooking in earnest—I even snuck a portable stove into my dorm room! As soon as I moved into an apartment with an oven, I started baking pizza and breads, and it snowballed from there.”

Trish worked in the legal field for seven years, where she met her husband Scott, a native of Hopewell. Four years ago, they married and moved to Hopewell, where they witnessed a revitalization taking place within its historic downtown district.

During the last two years, Trish ramped up her baking hobby. “I’ve had the joy of serving customers at the local farmer’s market, through custom orders, and even through Guncotton Coffee when I supplied pastries during the spring of 2018. I quickly realized that locals were craving baked goods lovingly made from scratch, and my home oven couldn’t keep up.  When I heard a commercial space was available, I resigned from my analyst position to be part of the incredible changes in downtown Hopewell.”

“Wonder City Bakery will make a great addition to our growing downtown district,” says Evan Kaufman, Executive Director of the Hopewell Downtown Partnership, a designated Main Street program spearheading the revitalization effort. “I have personally worked with Trish over the last several months and am thoroughly impressed with her dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, and business savvy. She will make an excellent small business owner in our downtown.”

So far this year, there have been a half dozen new business openings including an Irish Pub, an Escape Room, and a Meadery.  Several more are planned to open before year-end.

Wonder City Bakery will be located at 245 E Broadway, Suite 2, which formerly housed Burnette’s Baked Goods.  They will offer everything from cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, and biscuits, to lighter options like yogurt with housemade granola. Their goal is to open by the end of the year.

If you would like to help support the new bakery, Trish is running a GoFundme campaign to help offset the startup costs associated with the new business venture. In exchange, Trish is offering several different rewards, including private catered parties and baking classes.  You can find out more by going to www.gofundme.com/WCB-brickandmortar or www.wondercitybakery.com.
